Step-by-Step Grammar Volume I: Basic Grammar teaches the eight parts of speech: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, pronoun, preposition, conjunction and interjection. The organization of this book is very different from the majority of grammar books. In most grammar books, verbs are presented first. In the verb chapter, the student identifies verbs in sentences that are full of other words. The student has not yet learned the functions of these other words. This same problem persists through the noun, pronoun, adjective, and adverb chapters. It is not until nearly the end of the book that the student is able to identify every word in the sentence and explain its function. Frequently, this arrangement leaves the student feeling confused and gives him the idea that most of English cannot be understood by anyone other than English teachers.

From the beginning, the sentences are kept simple so that every word may be identified. No word or phrase appears in the exercises until it has been explained. This arrangement should help the student realize that English grammar functions by a set of rules that he can understand and master.

Review(s)

I cannot tell you how much we appreciate your 'Step-by-Step Grammar' Volume 1: Basic Grammar book! Our son was struggling a bit with the mechanics of the English language. We had pulled him out of public school and didn't really have an idea of what to do in some subjects when we brought him home. Let me tell you, your book has been a joy for him! Before, grammar was torture for him! Since an early foundation was not laid, he was clueless about what to do in his higher level books. This year, I decided to go back to the basics for him, but because of his age (14 years) and intellect, I did not want to insult him with a 'baby' book. Your course was the answer! The lessons are full enough that he understands what he needs to do, yet, there isn't the unnecessary repetition (for his age) that are in other grammar curriculums.

I have to say 'two thumbs up' for a great program to refresh the basics! I also appreciate the very thorough answer key!

I love the progression of the sentences...and the explanations and diagrams in the answer key to help me help him, when he needs it. Let me tell you though, this is the first year I have not really had to help him at all understand a concept. There is just enough repition that his brain doesn't shut off with 'oh, no, not this again!' thoughts...but allows him to retain and apply what he has learned.

Thank you so much for this resource! I plan on hanging on to this one as a reference book when we no longer need to use it daily. I also plan on using it during the summer for retention in our younger children.
