How To Hold a Pencil (or Crayon) Correctly

Whether a child is right- or left-handed, the pencil should be firmly held by the thumb and first two fingers of the hand. The fingernails should form a rough triangle around the end of the pencil as seen in the center picture. A pencil grip (such as a Stetro) is useful, especially if your child already has a bad habit.

A correct grip will lessen fatigue and make it easier to form all the letters correctly, especially in the future when the child learns to write in cursive. It is worth the effort to make a child learn to hold his pencil correctly.
